Abstract

Speaking skills are essential language skills to master in the digital era. Indonesian teachers are therefore challenged to develop approaches and materials according to the development of students in this era. Gamification is an approach that Indonesian language teachers can develop to be more effective and make students involved in learning. This study intends to further explore gamification's effectiveness in learning speaking skills. The research is a quasi-experimental study involving 34 students of class XI IPS MAN 4 Jakarta in one learning session. All students were involved in total sampling and received treatment as a whole without a control group. The data were observed using a questionnaire according to the curriculum target and analyzed by frequency distribution. The results showed that gamification improved students' abilities, learning motivation, and engagement. The implication is that the gamification designed in this study can be further developed in accordance with the study's limitations. The game can also be developed digitally.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the use of the EDSAW acronym, a reading strategy in locating contextual clues systematically among tertiary-level students. It takes a quantitative research design to answer the research question, ‘How effective is the use of the EDSAW acronym in comprehending a reading text?’ The sample was selected based on a purposive sampling technique that comprised 10 students from a public university who scored band 4 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET). The data collection technique involves a pre-test and a post-test. A reading text was given during the pre-test where students were tasked to locate contextual clues without using the EDSAW acronym. Then, the same participants were taught to use the acronym in finding contextual clues in a reading text. The mean scores of the pre-test and post-test were compared. The findings revealed that there was a significant increase of 2.3 points in the mean score of the post-test. This study highlights the need for teachers and students to use the reading strategy EDSAW acronym during the teaching and learning of reading in ESL classrooms and fills a void in the area of reading comprehension by enabling students to read more independently.

Abstract

This research was designed to figure out the effectiveness of the think aloud strategy in improving students’ reading comprehension ability. The think aloud strategy is a learning strategy whereby students verbalize their thought as they read. Twenty 2nd grade students of MAS Darul Ulum Banda Aceh participated in this quantitative research. This research used a pre-experimental design with one-group pretest-posttest. The finding showed that the think aloud strategy improves students’ reading comprehension ability, especially in analytical exposition text. It can be seen from the mean score of the post-test (54.4) which was higher than that of the pre-test (36.4). The t-test analysis showed that the t-score (4.255) obtained a higher gain than the t-table (2.085). This strategy successfully helped the students to increase their reading comprehension ability in all aspects, particularly in identifying main ideas, making inferences, summarizing, and interpreting vocabulary. Therefore, the think aloud strategy can be considered as an effective instructional tool for teaching reading skill.

The students’ perceptions of the online speaking class are mostly positive in the terms of usefulness and effectiveness. However, most of the students did not have positive intention to enroll in online speaking class in the future. Abstract

This study aims to analyze the speech acts based on Searle’s classification of illocutionary acts and perlocutionary acts in the teen novel, ‘Dilan, Dia adalah Dilanku Tahun 1990’. This research aims to identify and describe these acts as done by one of the main characters, Dilan. This research used a qualitative method. The data were in the form of a description where all of Dilan’s utterances are identified in the novel and further analyzed. The findings of this research showed that there are five types of illocutionary acts in the novel. They are assertive, directive, commisive, expressive, and declarative. The assertive type is the dominant type used by Dilan rather than the other types. In terms of the perlocutionary act, the effect of Dilan’s utterances tends to persuade his hearers, impress, encourage, convince, amuse, intimidate, inform and surprise them. As a consequence, persuading the hearers is the dominant effect based on Dilan’s utterances. The context of situation determined all the acts performed by this main character. Conclusively, the findings of this study are expected to broaden the context of linguistics, especially of speech acts as a part of pragmatics in linguistics.
